Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata is the most popular piece of music for falling asleep, according to a global sleep study.

A fifth (20%) of UK respondents said that the enduring piano work of 1801, known for the swaying triplets in its first movement, is the music most likely to help them fall asleep.

The study found that it was the solo piano music, on the whole, that provided the calmest sleep.

Of the 2,000 adult participants, 14% said Chopin’s Relaxing Nocturne No. 2 in E-flat major was the most likely to give them instant calm and induce sleep.

The study, conducted by digital health management brand Zepp, found that nearly one in five (19%) listens to relaxing music at bedtime every night.

Meanwhile, nearly a third (32%) of those surveyed said soothing music helped them fall asleep.

Classical music was the most effective genre in helping people sleep well, followed by pop and country or folk music.

89% of people surveyed globally agreed that listening to soothing music can help sleep.

Recent studies on the calming power of classical music have shown that listening to orchestral melodies can improve mental health and well-being in isolation.

Meanwhile, research in the United States has claimed that listening to Beethoven’s “moonlight” sonata the night before an exam can improve academic performance.
