Sierra Ferrell – “Years” – When John Anderson first threw this song at us as the title track of his 2020 comeback album, we knew it would immediately establish itself as one of his best songs in a storied career, just to alongside all his old hits. A cover has to be particularly compelling to make the Top 25 playlist, and that’s what Sierra Ferrell delivered here ahead of the John Anderson tribute album’s August 5 release.
The Broken Spokes – “All I Hear You Say” – It’s your chance to get on board with this traditional country outfit from Houston, TX, who are set to release a new album of classic country goodness on July 15 titled where did i go wrong. The Broken Spokes are your next favorite Texas honky tonk band.
Zoe Cummins, Gabe Lee – “Common Law” – “Earlier this year, Zoe and Andy Wills wrote a witty love song about the concept of common-law relationships,” said Gabe Lee. “It took some pleading, but I finally convinced Zoe to let me sing a duet with her.” Just one single for now, but keep an eye out for new projects from these two artists soon.
Kimberly Kelly – “Honky Tonk Town” – This late bloomer from Texas just released her first official album I’ll tell you what’s gonna happen (the title is taken from a quote by Billy Joe Shaver), and it’s deliciously overtaken by the goodness of 90s country music. Top 25 reading.
Willi Carlisle – “Vanlife” – Willi Carlisle has been an independent nation’s best-kept secret for far too long, but he’s about to break the domestic crowd with his next release, Individual, Missouri released July 15. Carlisle’s songwriting is exceptional, and “Vanlife” is like a modern take on a Roger Miller road song, with added portions of great traditional country instrumentation. Carlisle suffered a concussion from falling out of a van while making the video for this song. The least you can do is listen to it.
American Aquarium – “Waking the Echoes” – If sad songs make you happy, BJ Barham and American Aquarium have your medicine. Their new album Chicamacomique is full of it, but “Waking Up the Echoes” is not to be overlooked and is tragically relevant to so many of our lives.
