Concerns about safety and risk management prompted the decision to cancel the Tamworth Country Music Cavalcade in 2022, with a new ‘static’ event instead. Festival director Barry Harley said that while the cavalcade has been an iconic feature of the festival for many years, it has come under scrutiny from a safety perspective due to vehicle movements since some time. “During the 2020 festival, a security audit was conducted on the cavalcade and it revealed a number of areas that we just are not able to handle,” he said. “The end result is that we cannot guarantee the safety of participants or visitors with a ride, so we cannot manage a ride in its current form. Mr. Harley said the cavalcade as we know it with trucks and cars on Peel Street is unlikely to return. “But that doesn’t mean that a cavalcade in a different form or location couldn’t be considered – but for 2022, it’s impossible for us to handle a safe event,” he said. Organizers are now looking to a brand new festival community celebration and community market event in conjunction with the Market Project. The day will feature community stalls, market stalls, performances by regulars of the cavalcade, and cameo artist appearances. “Because we know that there are many community organizations that thrive on this exhibit in the cavalcade, we have developed a static version that will run over a few hours,” Mr. Harley said. The cavalcade was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, and 2022 will only be the second time since the 1980s that the event has been canceled.
