Country music lovers can get ready to listen to catchy tunes.
Jocelyn Tuahine, who organizes the Taranaki Country Music Festival with her husband, George, has announced that the popular event will now take place in April.
“We made the decision a fortnight ago. We called all the artists to make sure the new dates were suitable for everyone and they did. It really worked in our favour.”
The new dates for the festival are Friday April 15 to Sunday April 17, which is the Easter weekend.
“We had planned a fundraising concert this weekend, but have pushed it back. Our country music fans can now look forward to two things happening later in the year.”
Jocelyn says the new dates are working well.
“It also happens to be Easter weekend. We’ve had a festival over Easter weekend before and it was very popular. We hope it will be the same this year.”
Jocelyn says people can always expect the same musical talent, the only difference is that they will be performing later in the year.
“We have a showcase on Friday and Saturday nights. The Kahu sisters from Taupō perform, they have an awesome harmony. Ivan Broughton and En-Tranzet perform again, and Sally Burgess, originally from Nashville, also performs. The Friday night we have an Elvis impersonator performing, which will be entertaining.”
The country music festival is led by Roger Tibbs.
“Roger is a well-known New Zealand yodel. He’s taken a break from music, but he’s back and ready to play.”
Participants also have the opportunity to stand up and perform.
“We have a number of open-mic sessions over the weekend. It’s a great opportunity for the audience to get up and try.”
She says if the country is still in the red from Covid-19 as the festival approaches, the event will have to be postponed again.
“We really hope we can manage this, but the only way to do it is for the country to be in orange.”
